Skridskokungen Jackson Haines, även känd som konståkningens fader, var en mångsidig artist som inte bara uppträdde på Nybrovikens is. Haines gjorde även komiska nummer på Kungliga Teatern, iförd rullskridskor liknande dagens rollerblades.
Haines kom till Stockholm i mars 1866 och blev snabbt en populär figur i huvudstaden. I februari 1867 var han fortfarande kvar, att döma av det här brevet till Kungliga Teaterns direktör Erik Wilhelm af Edholm. Av Edholm, som stod kung Karl XV nära, har Haines just fått besked att han tilldelats kungens gudmedalj.

I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your distinguished favor of this morning notifying me of his Royal Majesty the Kings pleasure to bestow upon me his Gold Medal with crown of the 8th size.
I cannot sufficiently express the sense of gratitude and pleasure this peculiar token of his Majesty’s affiliation of my art awakens in my mind. But I beg most respectfully to assure you, that among the most endearing and pleasurable remembrances I cherish of my sojourn in Europe, will be that of Sweden, its Monarch, its people, and the Royal Theatre of the capital.
